Tasmania is located off the coast of Australia, and is considered a state belonging to Australia. We came into port after 3 miserable days at sea with swells reaching 30 feet. Even I, who usually don’t get sea sick, was struggling to feel well. The skies had been menacing and people were struggling on board to find fun ways to pass the time and not fall over from the boat rocking.

So, putting our feet on solid ground was quite welcomed. Hobart was a large port town with urban sprawl climbing up the hillsides. I could tell that the vegetation here was quite different than what I am used to as the trees were not quite like ones I’ve ever seen before. I’m sure traveling around the island would have led to some great discoveries but given that we had a late arrival into port due to the storm (2pm instead of 7am), I limited my exploring to Hobart and walked the town (which really wasn’t too spectacular) and then walked a fair distance to go the Royal Botanical Gardens (which was well worth the trip). It was nice to be on solid ground and smell flowers and dirt after 3 days at sea in a storm!

It was a short visit and we begrudgingly re-boarded the ship after just a few hours in Hobart to set sail for Melbourne.
