West Coast, New Zealand

I left Nelson and headed southwest today, driving through some more lush mountains and hills, passing many rivers and crossing many bridges.

One of the best bridges I came across was a swinging foot bridge.  I mustered my courage and made myself cross this rather precarious bridge.  I have a bit of a fear of heights, so I had a death grip on the cable the entire time!

After the swinging bridge I had a few more hours of winding road before I popped out at the ocean and found the west coast of New Zealand to have the most amazing coastline drive!

Driving south I soon came to Punakaiki, the Pancake Rocks.  This was an amazing thing to see!  These rocks are layered and stick up like fingers from the ocean below.  Beautiful!!

After Punakaiki, I drove around downtown Greymouth (this took all of 2 minutes) and found my lodging at the very nice Awatuna Homestead. I dropped my stuff, drove on to Hokitika (10 minutes down the coastal road), and had dinner in town.  Hokitika is slightly nicer than Greymouth, but I'll spare you the pictures.........  After dinner, I sat and watched the waves for a bit and then headed back to my lodging.  The best part of my day was this evening when a girl named May let herself into my room at my B&B (she just opened the door right up!!), brought her own toys, and demanded that we play.  We fell instantly in love.

I know, I know - I was hoping for something else as well...

On to the glaciers tomorrow in Franz Josef and Fox Glacier!

  1. Adrienne I had no idea this trek was going to be so amazing for you. The photo's are fabulous, as of course are the places you are photographing. It makes me want to jump on a plane and visit which is saying something as I hate to fly. Take care and I look forward to keeping track of your travels. Thanks for setting up this blog so we can all stay in touch with you! Later-
